  5. Ribosomal protein S12 is one of the proteins from the small ribosomal subunit.
  6. In Escherichia coli, S12 is known to be involved in the translation initiation
  7. step. It  is  a  very  basic  protein  of  120 to 150 amino-acid residues. S12
  8. belongs to  a  family  of  ribosomal  proteins which, on the basis of sequence
  9. similarities [1], groups:
  10.  
  11.  - Eubacterial S12.
  12.  - Archaebacterial S12.
  13.  - Algal and plant chloroplast S12.
  14.  - Cyanelle S12.
  15.  - Protozoa and plant mitochondrial S12.
  16.  - Yeast S28.
  17.  - Drosophila mitochondrial protein tko (Technical KnockOut).

  19. As a  signature  pattern,  we  selected  the  best  conserved regions in these
  20. proteins, located in the center of each sequence.
